Currently, there are 15 numbers retired by the Canadiens, which forces the organization to be very selective about future retirements.

Carey Price is increasingly discussed as a potential candidate for this honor, but opinions on this matter are quite divided.

All Carey Price is missing is a Stanley Cup. He has won everything except the most important trophy, which tarnishes his career according to many.

However, the Cup is a team achievement, though not everyone sees it that way. After all, even Wayne Gretzky had very strong teammates to win it.

During the Canadiens' Stanley Cup Final in 2021, a veteran was very important, although fairly quiet. Eric Staal, who was at the end of his career, was a great addition for the playoffs.

Staal played 12 seasons in Carolina and was the team's captain. He notably won the Stanley Cup with them in 2006.

If we recall, in the first round, the Canadiens won the first two games in Carolina against Martin Gerber. It was then that Cam Ward came into the series and never looked back.

The Canes won the next four games, on their way to the Cup. Staal recorded 28 points in 25 games.

He will have his number retired by the Hurricanes. While Staal was an excellent hockey player, many believe he didn't do enough for his number to be retired.

I suppose for a young organization, it's quite acceptable. After all, the Senators retired Chris Neil's number!
