As training camp got underway, the Montreal Canadiens' general manager, Kent Hughes, finally settled an important matter by trading goalie Casey DeSmith. In return, the Canadiens acquired a third-round pick and veteran Tanner Pearson.
However, the addition of another forward raised some concerns among Canadiens fans, who feared Pearson might take the spot of a team prospect, thereby hindering the development of certain young players. Nonetheless, Renaud Lavoie reassured fans, stating it would be quite surprising if he took a role intended for rookies trying to earn a spot in Martin St-Louis' lineup.
"Tanner Pearson better have a strong camp. I don't think this guy will hinder the progress of the youngsters. He will need to prove that he has his place in the Canadiens lineup and that he is ready for this training camp." - Renaud Lavoie
Moreover, the journalist from TVA Sports took everyone by surprise during his appearance on the JiC show, suggesting a major turnaround involving the former Vancouver Canuck might be in the works. Indeed, he believes Tanner Pearson could be placed on waivers if he fails to impress the Canadiens' top brass.
"If there's another player on the left or right who is superior to him and we need to put him on waivers, we will." - Renaud Lavoie
Wow! That's certainly straightforward!
However, we strongly hope that the forward will perform this season to possibly become an attractive piece for other NHL teams at the trade deadline, especially since he will become a free agent this summer. Kent Hughes might then acquire an additional draft pick or even a quality prospect.
One thing is for sure, this will be a matter to watch as the Canadiens are expected to announce their final lineup by the end of next week.
