The season is rapidly approaching for the Montreal Canadiens, who officially played their first preparatory match last night. In fact, we can expect a fierce battle throughout the training camp between goaltenders Samuel Montembeault and Jake Allen, both of whom want to seize the number one spot for the upcoming season.

34-year-old veteran Jake Allen, who is entering the first year of his two-season contract, made a significant statement last week, saying he wanted to play more games this season. However, the goaltender still guarded the Canadiens' net 40 times in 2022-2023. It is clear he does not wish to share the task with his Quebec counterpart, aiming to be the starting goaltender for the organization.

However, Samuel Montembeault possibly has the most to gain this season, due to his status as a free agent next summer. Still without a contract for the next year, the 26-year-old will need to prove himself and continue the progress he started last season to earn a new deal with the Canadiens.

Although there were practically no contract negotiations during the offseason, Monty made a significant statement about his future with the Canadiens. Indeed, the goaltender is still confident that a turn of events could occur, and he could sign a contract extension before the first game of the season against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

«If I can sign a deal, the sooner, the better. I knew there were a lot of issues to sort out this summer. Jake Allen, he did it during training camp. So, it could happen in the next month. We still have a lot of time.» - Samuel Montembeault

He clearly admitted that he wanted to stay with the Canadiens as long as possible, loving to play for his childhood team. He loves Montreal fans and wants to wear the Blue-White-Red uniform for many more seasons to come. Finally, a Quebecer who wants to play with the Canadiens!

«I would certainly love that. It's nice to be in Montreal and be close to home. Everywhere you go, there are passionate fans. It's fun to meet everyone. People are so happy, and they are friendly. If I can make people happy, I'm pleased to talk.» - Samuel Montembeault

Moreover, number 35 made sure to arrive in excellent shape for the training camp, having trained intensely all summer. He even joined the Canadian team during the World Championship to get the chance to play more games, distinguishing himself with remarkable performances.

Certainly, if Samuel Montembeault continues to develop and manages to surpass his last season, it would not be surprising if he could finally sign a long-term agreement with the team. We strongly hope that he will be able to help the Canadiens achieve success this year, as he could quickly become an important element of the organization in the years to come.
