Huge controversy that directly impacted the Canadiens: It can't go on any longer
Since the beginning of the season, it's evident that the Canadiens are undisciplined, and referees' whistles are quick to blow. It's not that all penalties are ridiculous, but some are undeserved, a common issue for all teams.
In the end, the Canadiens need to reflect on their game and improve this aspect. However, there are certain referee decisions that simply do not pass muster, and the Canadiens were victims of one yesterday.
Late in the game, when the score is tight, referees must be absolutely certain before raising their arms to call a penalty. The penalty given to Cole Caufield is simply unacceptable, and occurrences like these happen too often across the NHL.
The League needs to address this problem. These poor decisions can change the course of games. Officiating should not have an impact on outcomes, which happens too frequently.
I'm not sure if a mandatory video review rule in the final two minutes should be implemented, but a solution must be found. Referees are doing their best, and they are human. The game moves so quickly that they can't be blamed.
