As is the case every year just before the draft, teams must renew the rights of some of their prospects by signing them to their first contracts; otherwise, they become free agents.

The Canadiens have seven players in this position this year, and Kent Hughes has until June 1st to reach agreements with them. Here is the list:

Certainly, the team will have to let some go and won't be able to come to terms with everyone. In our opinion, three players have very little chance of still being in the organization come June 2nd.

Indeed, Blake Biondi, Petteri Nurmi, and Ty Smilanic will likely have to find employment with another organization.

Smilanic had already been released last summer before reaching another agreement with the Habs later on. Blake Biondi is not productive in the NCAA even though he is among the older players, and Petteri Nurmi should be a direct victim of the depth among defensemen in the organization.

Now, it remains to be seen if Cedrick Guindon, Jared Davidson, Miguel Tourigny, and Luke Tuch have done enough to stay in the organization.
