Matvei Michkov is set to take part in an exciting two-team race, according to a Russian source
Two files are causing a stir in Montreal as the NHL Draft approaches on June 28th. Of course, there is the potential trade of Pierre-Luc Dubois, but also the possible selection or not of Matvei Michkov with the Montreal Canadiens' 5th overall pick.
The young Russian phenom could drastically change the portrait of the first round by himself, as several teams including the Habs could look past him despite his immense talent equal to that of first overall pick Connor Bedard.
The 18 year old has reassured some fans by stating he will be present at the event in Nashville and meet with some teams over the next few days, which could have an impact on his selection within the top 10.
However, news from Russia has arisen over recent hours that may cool down any hopes for Michkov's arrival in Montreal.
According to information reported by Match TV, citing a well-placed source from Russia, it is with Washington Capitals that he will land at first round 8th overall spot in this year's draft - almost certain at 99%. The only other possibility being San Jose Sharks at 4th position. Thus eliminating any hope of Montreal Canadiens selecting him.
"Matvei Michkov is set to make his way to Washington and join the Capitals, you'll see. The young Russian forward has declined all meetings from other teams in Russia due to demands from his team, the SKA. It is expected that he won't be taken in the top three picks due to his three-year contract in Russia, making it unlikely for Montreal (5th pick) to take him on. Teams like Arizona (6th) or Philadelphia (7th) understand that he may not come to the NHL until he's 26. Given how much can change within an organization's hierarchy in 8 seasons, what could be the benefit of selecting a prospect who won't help out your team until your successor's reign? San Jose Sharks (4th pick) are seen as the only real competition for Michkov, as their owner is a big fan of Igor Larionov and Russian hockey in general. If for some incredible reason they don't take him, he won't pass Vancouver Canucks (11th), but according to reports, Capitals' management is seriously considering selecting Michkov as a successor for Alex Ovechkin."

It does not bode well for those who wish to see this potential generational talent chosen by the Tricolore with the 5th pick in the draft.
If Will Smith is selected among the first four picks, and Montreal passes on the Russian player, it seems likely that their selection will be Ryan Leonard, David Reinbacher, Zach Benson or Dalibor Dvorsky.
