Plot twist: Shocking statement from Daniel Brière regarding the Canadiens and their former top prospect Cutter Gauthier
Similar to Kent Hughes and the Canadiens, Daniel Brière is a man of integrity who controls his emotions well. He is well-suited for a general manager role, and the quality of the human being behind the player is paramount.
Upon his arrival in Philadelphia, Daniel had a lot of housecleaning to do. The hiring of John Tortorella was not a coincidence; far from it. It can now be said that a significant shake-up was made on Monday.
Indeed, Cutter Gauthier left the organization through a trade to Anaheim. The young American sold himself well at the draft to be selected, but he subsequently showed a somewhat entitled side.
"Cutter told us at the draft that he was built to be a Flyer... A few months later, he told us he didn't want to be a Flyer."
- Daniel Brière
This speaks volumes about the individual, and this kind of thing is known throughout the NHL. The Canadiens and Kent Hughes were certainly aware of it, and it helped them make an informed decision.
Highly respected journalist covering the Flyers, Charlie O'Connor, stated that the Flyers tried to trade Gauthier to the Canadiens, but it was rejected.
"I heard a rumor they quietly shopped Gauthier back at the draft, & it was one of the things I was chasing today.
Can now confirm yes, Gauthier was shopped. They tried to swap him for the No. 5 pick, presumably to take David Reinbacher & ensure Michkov got to 7 too. MTL passed." Gauthier is quite the hockey player, but he has proven to be somewhat of a loose cannon, something that both Kent Hughes and Daniel Brière do not want in their organization.
David Reinbacher was perceived as the 5th overall pick by many teams, including the Flyers and the Coyotes, who were picking at the 6th and 7th spots.
