However, according to information obtained by Arpon Basu from The Athletic, the general manager of the Canadiens does not plan to use this trick as he would not want to jeopardize the team's salary cap in 2024-2025.
Given that there is only one season left on Mike Hoffman's contract, Kent Hughes would prefer to try to trade him while retaining a certain portion of his salary, which would have no impact on the Canadiens' salary cap in 2024-2025.
By buying out the forward's contract this summer, the Tricolore would save 3.3 million dollars next season, but it would still have to pay a sum of 1.17 million dollars in two years and this is simply not in the plans of the general manager.
However, it will be very difficult to conclude a transaction involving Mike Hoffman, who only scored 14 goals and 20 assists in 67 games last season. The 33-year-old forward should therefore play his last season in the Canadiens uniform before becoming a free agent next summer.
We can therefore expect to see Mike Hoffman in Martin St. Louis' lineup when the season kicks off next October.
