Indeed, at the 2023 NHL Draft, he traded the 31st and 37th picks to the Avalanche for Alex Newhook. We've seen some very promising things from the forward, and it looks very promising for this year.
It's especially on the Avalanche's side that this transaction isn't going very well. The 31st pick was used to select the very talented defenseman Mikhail Gulyayev, and the bad news just keeps coming for him.
He is one of their top prospects, but he has to pay his dues and he doesn't want to. Gulyayev wants to play only in the NHL, otherwise he won't come to North America.
Moreover, the defenseman has signed a contract with the KHL until 2026, which does not help his arrival in North America. At only 19 years old, it's clear he already has a problematic attitude, something the Avalanche certainly wants to avoid after the Valeri Nichushkin case.
With 34 points in 55 games last year, Newhook exceeded expectations in my opinion and is in full progression. Meanwhile, the Avalanche isn't even sure if the players acquired in this transaction will ever play in the NHL.
A true heist by Kent Hughes, once again.
