He probably deserved that salary during his prime 30-goal seasons, but today, he is no longer able to deliver the performance he once did, which is normal. His style of play does not allow for longevity and consistency in the NHL. In other words, he has taken his share of hits.
As of today, Brendan Gallagher is still useful in the NHL, but not at that salary. However, he could provide good service to a team in need of players and that needs to reach the salary floor.
In this sense, Georges Laraque recently made a proposal that has clearly not garnered unanimous support. He received quite a bit of criticism.
Since the unfortunate passing of Johnny Gaudreau and the trade of Patrik Laine that preceded this tragedy, the Blue Jackets have lost over $15 million on their cap, putting them under the salary floor.
If Kent Hughes proposed such a trade, Don Waddell would likely accept without hesitation. In my opinion, even without Owen Beck, this offer would be accepted.
However, it wouldn't make sense for Kent Hughes. The Canadiens may be progressing, but the rebuild is not finished, and trading a first-round pick and one of their best offensive prospects for salary cap space, something the GM does not need, would be quite contradictory.
Personally, I would keep Brendan Gallagher under these conditions. He is still useful on the third line and is an excellent veteran to support the young players in the organization.
