The state of the goalies is far from worrying; in fact, it's encouraging. Both for the Canadiens and the Rocket, the netminders promise to be solid, showing they've worked hard this summer.
So much so that a young player could shake things up. When discussing the future in goal for the Canadiens, all eyes are on Jacob Fowler, but we certainly shouldn't overlook Jakub Dobes, who is quite an athlete.
He had statistics similar to Fowler in his first year in the NCAA, and despite a very tough start to last season, he rebounded strongly in the second half of the season.
Jakub Dobes posted a .920 save percentage in the second half of the season, his first in professional hockey. He was the most-used goalie in the AHL with 51 games played.
With an impressive frame of 6'5" and 200 lbs and constant improvement, he could very well force Kent Hughes' hand to play in Montreal this year.
Cayden Primeau would thus be the big casualty, and he certainly has value. Not to speak against Primeau, who has had good moments, but he is inconsistent, and it's quite possible that the Canadiens would consider Jakub Dobes before him.
Submitting Primeau to waivers isn't a better option, as he would likely be claimed. If Jakub Dobes really makes his case, Kent Hughes will have no choice but to trade Cayden Primeau, because another three-way situation seems impossible.
This might also be why there are three goalies in Laval right now, including Luke Cavallin and Connor Hughes. This is a situation to watch closely...
