In recent weeks, rumors have been persistent regarding goalie Yaroslav Askarov and Kent Hughes' interest in him for the Canadiens.

We're talking about a very talented young goaltender with a promising future. Kent Hughes was one of the five finalists, but the asking price was too high.

Indeed, the Predators asked for goalie Jacob Fowler in return, a player many analysts believe to be a future star.

It was already known, and now confirmed, that Kent Hughes has no intention of trading him.

But another name has emerged from Craig Button: Owen Beck. With Oliver Kapanen's rise, some thought Kent Hughes might be willing to sacrifice Beck, but that is also out of the question.

"After all, if Pierre LeBrun is right AND Craig Button is also correct, it shows that Nashville was asking for at least two major assets in exchange for the goalie: Fowler and Owen Beck."

- Charles-Alexis Brisebois

Pierre LeBrun and Craig Button are highly credible sources, meaning Kent Hughes likely received this offer and turned it down. Given the return Nashville accepted for Yaroslav Askarov, they would have certainly taken Fowler and Beck if Kent Hughes had agreed.

This is great news, in a way. Kent Hughes is sticking to the plan and not deviating from it. He has repeatedly stated that he won't make trades to improve the present at the expense of the future.

Yaroslav Askarov will be good, but so will Jacob Fowler and Owen Beck. Time will tell if the GM was right to refuse.
