Trade rumors surrounding Patrik Laine have intensified, with Pierre LeBrun confirming that Laine is seeking a fresh start and that the Columbus Blue Jackets are working on a deal involving the talented winger.

Laine, known for his scoring prowess, fits the profile of the young, skilled player that Kent Hughes, the general manager of the Montreal Canadiens, is actively pursuing.

However, Laine's significant $8.7 million salary for the next two years is a considerable drawback, especially given his limited play last season due to injuries, having appeared in only 18 games.

Despite these concerns, Laine has demonstrated exceptional potential, having surpassed the 40-goal mark at just 19 years old, an impressive feat in the NHL.

Given Laine's contract, his trade value is considered somewhat negative, which could mean that acquiring him might not be as costly for the Canadiens as one might expect.

A recent trade proposal suggests that Laine could be exchanged for Filip Mesar, a young prospect who has shown promise in the OHL with 103 points in 97 games but has yet to fully prove himself.

While it's uncertain whether the Blue Jackets would accept this offer, the potential to free up nearly $8 million in cap space could be appealing to them. The Canadiens would gain a proven scorer in Laine, albeit with the risk associated with his high salary and recent injury history.

Ultimately, whether Kent Hughes has a strong interest in pursuing this deal and whether another team might present a more compelling offer remain to be seen.
