Important acquisition for the Habs: Kent Hughes has found his top-six forward
Since the beginning of the summer, we've been eagerly awaiting Kent Hughes' transaction that would bring a young player with top-six potential into the organization.
Clearly, the general manager is actively involved in multiple discussions, but nothing is progressing, and his only NHL-level acquisition, Alex Barré-Boulet, isn't guaranteed a regular spot in the lineup. Many analysts believe he may have to clear waivers and be sent to the AHL to become a star for the Rocket.
Kent Hughes' acquisition of a top-six forward with Alex Newhook
It's Hughes' acquisition from last year that could pay off significantly, with the trade bringing Alex Newhook to Montreal.
Quietly, Newhook had a solid season, tallying 15 goals and 34 points in 55 games, which translates to a pace of 50 points over 82 games. Moreover, he achieved this production with relatively average linemates and helped rejuvenate the seasons of Brendan Gallagher and Joel Armia.
"At 23 years old, Newhook is a serious candidate for a breakout season in 2024-25, not only because he finished the season strong after missing 27 games due to an ankle sprain but also because he rejuvenated veterans who seemed somewhat finished. By doing his part to revive the fortunes of Brendan Gallagher and Joel Armia, Newhook appears ready to fulfill his potential as a legitimate second-line center." - Adam Proteau
It's important to note that Kirby Dach will be healthy and is seen as the legitimate second-line center, but at worst, they could alternate between wing and center.
If Newhook reaches his full potential, he could surpass highly sought-after players like Martin Necas and Rutger McGroarty.
