Justin Barron trade offer: Kent Hughes has his hands tied
Justin Barron has just signed a two-year deal with the Canadiens, but everyone knows he'll likely be one of the first to go.
Kent Hughes has never stated it outright, but Barron does not (yet) represent the future of the Canadiens on the blue line. He might surprise, but as of now, he is far from assured of a top-6 spot.
A trade proposal came from journalist Allan Mitchell, who covers the Oilers. According to him, Barron would be a good fit for Edmonton, which is desperately searching for a right-handed defenseman.
"In his piece, the writer for The Athletic suggested that to acquire Zub from Ottawa, Philip Broberg would probably' be requested by the Senators, even though he is a lefty. Later in his column, he wondered if a Broberg-Barron trade might be possible."
- Raphael Simard
"Right-handed defensemen who can play on the top two pairs are highly sought after."
- Allan Mitchell I struggle to see how Kent Hughes could refuse such an offer, but the problem is that there is already congestion with left-handed defensemen. I find it hard to believe how Broberg could carve out a spot in Montreal.
Kent Hughes has his hands tied because if such an offer did come to the table, he would face a significant dilemma. In my opinion, he would be forced to refuse unless he believes Broberg would be more useful than Xhekaj, Harris, and Hutson.
Of course, the names of Michael Matheson and Kaiden Guhle, who are much better and form the Canadiens' top pair on defense, are not mentioned.
