The Canadiens finally have two goalies this year, and the three-goalie situation is over, with Samuel Montembeault and Cayden Primeau taking the spots.

Based on Martin St-Louis's use of his two goalies at the end of last season, it's quite hard to assess the value of each goalie, as they played roughly the same number of games.

Indeed, the organization doesn't seem convinced that either goalie deserves the number 1 role, and the musical chairs continue in Montreal.

However, according to The Hockey News, the Canadiens might have a number 1 goalie in Samuel Montembeault. There are seven other teams in the same category.

Petr Mrazek (Blackhawks)
Stuart Skinner (Oilers)
Darcy Kuemper (Kings)
Tristan Jarry (Penguins)
Joey Daccord (Kraken)
Connor Ingram (Utah)
Charlie Lindgren (Capitals)

Looking at teams with two goalies competing for the number 1 role, the Canadiens are not in that category.

Buffalo Sabres Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen or Devon Levi
Carolina Hurricanes Frederik Andersen or Pyotr Kochetkov
New York Islanders Ilya Sorokin or Semyon Varlamov
Philadelphia Flyers Samuel Ersson or Ivan Fedotov
Toronto Maple Leafs Joseph Woll or Anthony Stolarz

This suggests that Samuel has made a name for himself in recent years, and while he may not be considered a 100% number 1 goalie, he is the Canadiens' number 1, according to THN.

Cayden Primeau had a good season last year, and the competition between the two will be very healthy for the Canadiens. Two good goalies who want to play more.
