Honestly, I would be the first to be surprised, although the team shows promising signs of progress at all positions. They still lack maturity and talent, especially up front.
However, according to journalist Stu Cowan, who covers the Canadiens daily for The Gazette Montreal, if Ivan Demidov were to, quite unexpectedly, play in the NHL in 2024-25, the Canadiens could make the playoffs thanks to him.
We know he's good, we know he'll be special; some analysts even suggest he's the best offensive prospect drafted since Guy Lafleur.
Nevertheless, it's important to temper expectations for the young man. Sidney Crosby amassed 102 points in his rookie year, and with Mario Lemieux for about 20 games, the Penguins did not make the playoffs.
Having an exceptional player is great, and I personally believe in Demidov, but history has shown us that one player doesn't make a team. The Canadiens are not just one player away from making the playoffs, unfortunately, but it will come soon enough.
