It is now confirmed for Kent Hughes, and he is reportedly on the verge of making a decision on Lane Hutson
The Canadiens have a solid logjam on the blue line, which is not necessarily a bad thing for internal competition but could force Kent Hughes to make unpopular decisions.
Indeed, everyone is eager to see Lane Hutson in action for a full season in the NHL, and even though it is commonly believed he is ready, that is not the case for Kent Hughes.
Journalist Brian Wilde has suggested that the young defenseman will not have a minor role in professional hockey.
"In his view, reading between the lines, the GM said the following: unless Lane Hutson has an extraordinary camp (which obviously includes defensive aspects), he will go to Laval."
- Charles-Alexis Brisebois
On the offensive side, not only is Lane Hutson ready, but he is superior to many established NHL defensemen. It's rather the defensive side he needs to work on and show he is ready to face the best in the world.
According to Wilde, Kent Hughes has already confirmed that his young defenseman will start his professional career with the Rocket, which would not be a bad thing.
Keep in mind that Lane Hutson and David Reinbacher are likely to form a solid pair of defensemen for years to come in Montreal. Playing them significant minutes together in Laval this year is far from negative.
