It's now confirmed for Kristopher Letang and the Canadiens: the defenseman finally speaks out
During the 2022 draft, when the Canadiens selected Juraj Slafkovsky, a notable guest was present at the Bell Centre: Kristopher Letang.
He had not yet signed his six-year contract extension, and many believed Kent Hughes might acquire him. Since then, rumors have persisted, especially after Letang practiced with Canadiens players last summer at the CN Sports Complex. The speculation intensified when journalist Mark Madden mentioned that Letang had requested a trade to Montreal.
Renaud Lavoie, a close friend of Letang, even suggested that the defender would finish his career with the Canadiens. However, until now, we hadn't heard directly from Letang about the topic. Here's what he had to say:
"Did people talk about that? They didn't discuss it with me. [...] I didn't ask for a trade." - Kris Letang
That certainly clears things up. Personally, I'm relieved to see that the chances of Kristopher Letang coming to Montreal seem slim. He's good and has always been, but the Canadiens have strong young players who need ice time.
Letang still has four seasons remaining at $6.1 million on his contract, but he's not worried about the situation with the Penguins.
"Every year is different. In the NHL, we always say a two-week window can change a lot for an organization. That's how it is. We made changes. It was frustrating for everyone to see that it didn't come together last season. In the end, we were 24 hours away from a playoff spot and missed it." - Kris Letang, via TVA Sports
