Patrik Laine to Montreal: The price is now confirmed for Kent Hughes
Patrik Laine's name keeps circulating in Montreal, and since Friday, he is officially available for trade as he has exited the NHL's Player Assistance Program.
Although he is somewhat linked to the Canadiens, the price to pay is not entirely clear. Some analysts believe he has negative value, while others think the Jackets are seeking an established player in return.
Ultimately, Aaron Portzline, a well-connected journalist in Columbus, has settled the debate.
"The Blue Jackets are likely to seek draft picks and prospects in a trade for Patrik Laine as opposed to a roster player after their other offseason moves, per Aaron Portzline." This is excellent news for Kent Hughes, as he has exactly what Don Waddell is looking for, in addition to having enough salary cap space to accommodate Laine's $8.7 million contract.
The first name that comes to mind is Filip Mesar, who is somewhat disliked by Canadiens fans. Otherwise, the Canadiens have many prospects and draft picks available.
Some analysts believe that a second-round pick would be the maximum the Jackets could hope for, perhaps a first-round pick if they retain 50% of his salary.
The Jackets now have about two months to trade him, so we will soon know what value the Finn has on the market.
