We were very happy to learn that Patrik Laine is just suffering from a knee sprain and will miss between two and three months.

Personally, I expected his season to be over. He was really lucky to get off so lightly given the force of the impact, but the brace he was wearing on his knee certainly played a big role.

The $8.7 million salary of the Finn can therefore go directly to the long-term injured reserve list (LTIR), but Kent Hughes decided otherwise. Indeed, placing contracts on LTIR before the season is less advantageous for teams, so Kent Hughes was clever.

Carey Price's contract was also not on it, so the solution came from Rafaël Harvey-Pinard's contract. It was the young forward whose contract was placed on LTIR during the offseason, which was enough to not exceed the salary cap.

Now that the season is about to start, the contracts of Carey Price and Patrik Laine will be on LTIR, which means Kent Hughes will enjoy $19.2 million in wiggle room until the forward returns.

We know he has the means to make a solid acquisition, but I don't think he will move. The contracts of Juraj Slafkovsky and Kaiden Guhle are kicking in next season, and other contracts will need to be signed, like Kirby Dach's.

Nevertheless, in three years when the contracts of Brendan Gallagher and Josh Anderson are over, the Canadiens should be in very good financial shape.
