Major trade between Montreal and San Jose: Kent Hughes is very active
Earlier today, we learned that Kent Hughes traded the 26th overall pick to the Kings along with 2nd and 7th round picks in exchange for the 21st overall pick.
This trade almost didn't happen as the Canadiens and Sharks were in talks for the 14th overall pick.
"Dreger mentions on TSN that Hughes tried to trade up to 14 (with SJ) but the Sharks ended up dealing with Buffalo and moved up to 11."
- Habs Chronicle
This shows that the GM is very active and willing to give up a lot not only to move up in the draft but also to make trades and acquire a top-six forward.
According to many, this trade could set the stage for another one, similar to 2022. Hughes had traded Alexander Romanov for the 13th pick and then traded that pick for Kirby Dach.
With the 21st overall pick, the GM has a stronger bargaining position for an acquisition or to move up in the rankings.
We will see in just over an hour what will come of this, but don't be surprised if Gary Bettman announces a Canadiens trade on the draft floor.
