Martin St-Louis' Decisions: Brendan Gallagher Makes a Significant Statement
Where is Brendan Gallagher? Not long ago, the small forward was scoring around 30 goals per season, being everywhere on the ice, and acting as the spark plug for the team.
In recent years, injuries and a change in direction have affected him significantly, to the point where he now plays on the 3rd or 4th line.
At the beginning of the season, paired with Sean Monahan and Tanner Pearson, it seemed like he was back. Without claiming he was heading for a 30-goal season, things were going relatively well for him.
When Pearson got injured and this trio was dismantled, Gally completely faded away. Martin St-Louis limits him to a depth role, which visibly affects the number 11.
"It's not easy. I'm a proud guy. I feel like you want to contribute. I'm a proud guy, and I want to contribute. As a player, it's just another challenge and something you have to earn to regain confidence and opportunity.
It's not a good feeling. You want to have as many opportunities as possible. I hope to regain that confidence and get back to what I've been for most of my career." - Brendan Gallagher
Frustration is evident in Gallagher's game, taking bad penalties or, worse, committing unforgivable actions that result in a 5-game suspension.
We can understand the frustration, but he needs to channel it to elevate his game. The only place where Gally can take penalties is in front of the opposing goalie, not in the middle of the ice. He needs to rediscover his role as an intense player and play that way.
"For me right now, it's just about finding a certain rhythm. I feel like early in the year, I might have been in a comfort zone. Stability in the lines and everything else.
I feel like right now, I'm just trying to find a home, so to speak, to find a bit of chemistry with a line. When you feel comfortable, you have confidence, and the whole game flows well. I've worked well for a while. I think lately I've had a bit of a dip, and I hope I can get back to my early-season level." - Brendan Gallagher
Martin St-Louis doesn't use him to showcase his skills, but Gally isn't showcasing himself either. Unlike his contract, signed for the work he had done, he must earn his playing time through the work he will do and prove to the coach that he deserves more responsibilities.
