Montreal Canadiens Acquisition: Two Strong Young Forwards Proposed to Kent Hughes, Casey Mittelstadt and Alexander Holtz
Kent Hughes likes to trade picks to acquire young players in full progression. He did it with Kirby Dach two years ago and then with Alex Newhook last year.
Since both players got injured, we haven't seen the dividends of such a trade yet, but we had a convincing glimpse with Dach in 2022-23.
Hughes could do it again, and it's his plan, according to his own words, and he has the means to pay. With 23 draft picks for the next two years and as many prospects in the organization, he will surely find a taker.
Marco D'Amico has looked into the matter and named two young players who would make sense. The Sabres are potential logical partners, given that they have too many forwards and few quality defensemen, the opposite of the Habs.
These players are Casey Mittelstadt and Alexander Holtz. Mittelstadt was selected five picks before Nick Suzuki. He is entering the prime years of his career, at 25, and already has 44 points in 59 games this season.
Holtz is the 7th overall pick in 2020. He has 24 points this season despite very limited usage. The Devils also have many good forwards, so it's difficult to find him a quality spot.
