In the short term, there aren't really any players ready to make the jump to the Canadiens, except for Emil Heineman. It's a sad reality, but this is set to change with prospects like Ivan Demidov and Michael Hage on the horizon.
This means that the last thing the Canadiens need is to lose forwards, but with all the prospects in the organization, they don't have much choice but to let some go.
Recently, we learned that Rhett Pitlick won't be returning, and according to Marc Dumont, Ty Smilanic won't be back either.
In Smilanic's case, it's quite worrying. The young man decided to abandon his college career last summer to pursue professional hockey. He ended up playing in the ECHL with the Trois-Rivières Lions, and now his career is taking a different turn.
The prospect had hoped to play in the AHL, but that didn't happen. Now, Kent Hughes and the organization have decisions to make.
What is also concerning is that despite the surplus of forwards in the organization, there aren't many of high quality, except for Demidov and Hage. The attack has been questioned in Montreal for a long time, and it needs to be addressed eventually.
However, we can still be encouraged by the quality of our defensive prospects and goaltenders.
