The Canadiens with a significant disadvantage: announcement by Gary Bettman
The Canadiens have struggled to line up wins for the past three years, but this year, the team aims for a notable improvement.
Indeed, no one expects the Habs to make the playoffs, but if they can finish mid-pack and show improvement, that will be considered a win.
The Canadiens heavily disadvantaged by Gary Bettman
When looking at team travel, the Canadiens will be on the road (or in the air) much more than direct rivals like the Senators.
In total, that's nearly 17,000 km more over the entire season. It's starting to hurt.
"Indeed, Martin St-Louis' men will be the third team in the Eastern Conference to travel the most kilometers in 2024-2025 with a total of approximately 69,684 kilometers." - TVA Sports
We know that Western teams are geographically disadvantaged in terms of travel, as they are farther away than Eastern teams.
"Note also that the 10 teams that will travel the least next season are all in the East. In fact, the Pittsburgh Penguins will be the most advantaged, only traveling 51,016 kilometers (or 31,700 miles)." - TVA Sports
This means the Canadiens will have less rest than direct rivals, which could have a long-term impact.
Nevertheless, this shouldn't be used as an excuse. Martin St-Louis and his team are young and capable of facing this challenge.
