Indeed, there was much speculation when we learned that Hughes was in strong contention to acquire Yaroslav Askarov from the Predators, but ultimately, the Sharks came out on top.
It's a serious question. After all, if the GM is trying to acquire a goalie with Askarov's high potential, who has clearly stated he will not play in the AHL anymore, it's not to have him warming the bench.
As mentioned by my colleagues from Habs & LNH, two names have started circulating within the Canadiens' circles if Kent Hughes still wants to acquire a good young goalie.
Montrealer Devon Levi won't stay as a backup for long in Buffalo, and the organization will have to make a decision soon, with their focus seemingly shifting towards Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen.
The second candidate, and not the least, is Spencer Knight from the Florida Panthers. Personally, I've never understood why the organization drafted him only to sign Sergei Bobrovsky for 7 years shortly after.
Their decision was justified, as they recently won a Stanley Cup, but it's time to make a decision regarding Knight.
I'm not sure if changing goalies would be the best move since Samuel Montembeault and Cayden Primeau are both solid, and Jacob Fowler is pushing hard. Regardless, Kent Hughes will surely make the right decision for the team's future.
