In the 2023 draft, the Canadiens chose not to select Matvei Michkov, who was eventually picked by Daniel Brière and the Flyers at 7th overall.

He could very well be a draft steal, but for now, he is just one prospect among many. Promising, certainly, but he will have to climb the ranks like everyone else.

Daniel Brière quickly reminded him of this, and in an interview with journalist Mathias Brunet, he sent a clear message to his young prospect regarding his attitude, which is not always appropriate.

"When he reacts poorly to teammates, it might be because those players aren't competing as hard as he is. When you're young, you might not know how to handle that. He might not have used the right approach. But if it happens here, it won't be tolerated."

Ask any hockey player at any level you know, and they'll tell you how frustrating it is to play with indifferent teammates. Fortunately, it doesn't happen often in the NHL.

Players learn to deal with it and find ways to motivate underperforming teammates, and that's what Matvei Michkov will need to learn to do.

With a coach like John Tortorella, it's certain that such behavior won't be tolerated. He will never accept a rookie causing trouble in his locker room.
