In 2007, the Canadiens had two first-round picks and selected Ryan McDonagh and Max Pacioretty.

Things went awry when Bob Gainey traded McDonagh, among others, for Scott Gomez.

During the Rangers' rebuild, the defenseman eventually landed in Tampa Bay, where he helped the team win two championships.

The Lightning later let him go, which turned out to be a mistake. In recent years, the defense hasn't been the same without him.

Finally, the Lightning just completed a trade with the Nashville Predators to bring him back.

To the Lightning: Ryan McDonagh, 2024 4th-round pick.

To the Predators: 2025 2nd-round pick, 2024 7th-round pick.

We learned this morning that Julien Brisebois is keen on extending Steven Stamkos' contract, reducing the chances of him coming to Montreal.

This trade shows that the GM is willing to do whatever it takes to bring another Cup to Tampa Bay, and Stamkos will be crucial to that effort.

This isn't good news for the Canadiens if Kent Hughes had plans to offer Stamkos a contract.
