Horrible tragedy: A 21-year-old goaltender dies in the arms of the referee during a game
Hockey is a wonderful sport to play and watch, but sometimes there are scenes we never want to see, as happened in Trois-Rivières this weekend.
Indeed, young Zachary Bourassa was guarding the net for his DekHockey team in the Trois-Rivières tournament final when he suddenly passed away from a cardiac arrest.
"According to our information, early in the game, the young goalie felt unwell and requested help before collapsing in the arms of one of the officials. According to information gathered from his family by journalist Kassandra Lebel from Radio-Canada, he suffered a cardiac arrest."
It is truly heartbreaking to learn this. He was so young for such an outcome! And he had every chance to be revived, as a nurse and a respiratory therapist were present and did everything they could to save him.
"Sometimes, we hear stories where a death could have been avoided if certain measures had been taken earlier. Here, it's quite the opposite. If he could have been saved, he would have been. The people on site acted like true heroes."
All our thoughts are with Zachary's family and loved ones during these tragic times.
