Tanner Pearson returning to his roots? The return of the trade acquired by Kent Hughes could be surprising
Among the players likely to change teams by Friday, the name Tanner Pearson is definitely in the top 3 for the Canadiens, along with Jake Allen and David Savard.
For the veteran defenseman, it would be surprising if Kent Hughes goes through with it, as he is still very valuable to the team. Several rumors even suggest that he might sign a contract extension next year, as he will become a free agent in 2025.
As for Tanner Pearson, we're talking about a veteran who is relatively easy to trade, with a few months left on his contract. A Stanley Cup winner with the Kings, his return value could be quite surprising.
Indeed, the Kings are reportedly very interested in bringing him back to Los Angeles. Considering what Anthony Mantha brought to the Capitals, namely 2nd and 4th-round picks, there is room for optimism.
"He's a Stanley Cup winner, a professional, a reliable 3rd or 4th line forward, and the kind of hard worker that Darryl Sutter demanded when they won together in Los Angeles, and Canadiens coach Martin St-Louis believes he's been playing excellent hockey for a while now. But still, it's hard to imagine it fetching more than a third-round pick for Pearson at half price." - Eric Engels
If Kent Hughes can indeed get a 3rd-round pick for Pearson, it would be a win for the organization all around. Casey DeSmith has already brought in a 3rd-round pick, so the surplus will be a bonus.
While the market belongs to sellers, there's no doubt that it's possible. Now, it remains to be seen if the Kings are interested or if another team in need of depth and leadership will want his services.
