Three-team transaction involving the Montreal Canadiens: It's a real possibility for forward Jake Guentzel
The Canadiens have over $5 million in cap space, and unless there's a major surprise, this space is likely to increase, as the team is not expected to make significant acquisitions before March 8.
Kent Hughes is not likely to make a substantial acquisition in terms of salary. There are rumors of a trade with the Avalanche involving Ryan Johansen for Jake Allen, but the salary difference is only $150,000.
This is the perfect time to get involved in a transaction as a third team and retain salary against one or more prospects. According to Frank Seravalli, this could happen with the potential trade of Jake Guentzel.
"For the first time ever, a third-party broker netted a 3rd Rd Pick (#Yotes) last year in the Patrick Kane trade.
If #pens Jake Guentzel is ultimately on the move, an involved third-party could get a haul to eat money. Indeed, the Penguins are 7 points away from a playoff spot, and unless there is a major turnaround and an impressive winning streak, they may have to admit defeat for this year.
Jake Guentzel will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, and there are no negotiations between him and the Pens. Kyle Dubas might be forced to trade him.
This is where it gets interesting for the Canadiens:
"1. Montreal Canadiens. Projected cap space: $5.65 million. Remaining retention slots: 1. The Habs are still watching the market prices on the third-party broker game (third team involved in a trade to retain salary). You can bet they will be in, especially if Jake Allen stays."
Kent Hughes has already participated in a three-way trade with the Penguins this summer, which allowed him to get rid of Mike Hoffman. He could very well repeat the experience, especially since the Penguins don't have much choice.
