Last summer, Kent Hughes made a significant move by acquiring Sean Monahan in exchange for future considerations. This transaction, widely discussed and lauded, is clearly 100% in favor of the Canadiens, and the Flames are likely to regret it for a long time.

In addition to Sean Monahan, the Habs also secured a conditional first-round pick in 2025. All of this was done to sign Nazem Kadri and Jonathan Huberdeau, two players costing a combined 18 million against the salary cap and producing at a similar rate to Monahan. It's worth noting that the Canadiens are paying their number 91 only 1.985 million.

The excellent Andrew Zadarnowski has shared a chart outlining the potential outcomes with this pick, and it must be admitted that it's very intriguing, albeit complex. The chances of the Canadiens obtaining a very early pick are quite real, especially considering the Flames aren't headed anywhere.

Montreal Hockey Now's Marco D'Amico summarized the situation well. If such a scenario unfolds, the Canadiens will be in an excellent position.

"With scenario #3, the Montreal Canadiens would receive Calgary's first-round pick in 2025, which could range from the second overall pick in 2025 or, in the event that the Flames win the 2025 NHL lottery and select first overall, an unprotected first-round pick in 2026 from either Florida or Calgary."

So, Kent Hughes indeed pulled off a monumental heist in this transaction. Simply having Monahan on the team is already a significant gain, and the potential future first-round pick could haunt the Flames for the next 20 years.
