A name that's currently on everyone's lips in Vancouver is Conor Garland. The forward is no longer in the team's plans and is openly available for trade to any interested team.

However, with most clubs operating under tight salary cap constraints, Garland's $4.95 million salary until 2026 poses an issue. Both the Canucks and the potential acquiring team will require a third-party to retain salary, and that's where Kent Hughes comes into play.

According to David Pagnotta, discussions between Hughes and Patrik Allvin have already begun.

"According to what journalist David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reports, Canadiens GM Kent Hughes recently discussed with Canucks GM Patrik Allvin a way for the Canadiens to be the intermediary team in this transaction," as reported by Marco Normandin.

Retaining salary for another two years, in addition to the current season, is a significant commitment. Therefore, the return in the trade should be compelling, but there might be a hidden card here.

It is known that the relationship between Elias Pettersson and the Canucks is strained, and the young star will be a restricted free agent at the end of the current season. If the Canadiens' GM intends to acquire him this summer, having a good relationship with Allvin could play a key role in any future transaction.

This is a situation to monitor closely...
