Huge statement from Chantal Machabée about the Canadiens, and it's very encouraging for the future
By this date last year, the Canadiens had as many points in the standings after the same number of games. However, everything collapsed afterward.
Injuries certainly didn't help, but the goaltenders also stopped performing. In short, everything, really everything, started to go wrong at the same time.
This year, even though the record is identical or nearly so, we can see a lot of character from the players and improved maturity from the defense and Samuel Montembeault.
It's also important to note that significant injuries occurred early in the season with players like Kirby Dach and David Savard, among others. Yet, the Canadiens held their ground, sitting just three points out of a playoff spot as of writing.
Internally, there is belief, and Chantal Machabée summarized the current sentiment within the team:
"It's a great group of guys. We have fun. I'm telling you: we could surprise some people.
When Josh Anderson was named the first star and received applause, I always wait for the player to bring him into the locker room. The players heard that ovation. And when Josh entered the locker room, he received an ovation inside the locker room. It was so beautiful. I had tears in my eyes."
- Chantal Machabée The only major issue I see is the team's difficulty in winning at the Bell Centre. If the Habs can come back with a winning record at home, we could really start to believe in the playoffs this year.
