That's truly incredible. Do you remember when Kent Hughes arrived, how transparent he was in press conferences?

It was so refreshing and made a difference compared to Marc Bergevin, who didn't give many details about anything.

As time goes on, Hughes is becoming less transparent, and one wonders why. It's appreciated by fans and journalists, and it doesn't harm anyone.

But why has Kent Hughes changed?

Radio-Canada journalist Marc Antoine Godin provided information on the subject. There is a rule stating that general managers are not allowed to mention the name of an opposing player.

However, Hughes mentioned Connor McDavid in a recent press conference, meaning that if he became available, no one would be untouchable on the team.

"And Godin told the other journalists that Hughes had to be warned at that level:

'He was warned because he did it in a more compromising way at the beginning and when he arrived at the helm of the Canadiens.

He got a little slap on the wrist.'" - Marc Antoine Godin and via an article from DLC

We understand that Hughes was jokingly mentioning McDavid, but it's the kind of statement that doesn't sit well with Gary Bettman. The Canadiens' general manager received a call from the NHL.

It's really unfortunate that the NHL is trying to control what GMs say. Expect press conferences to be much less precise and more redundant now.
