The Canadiens add a 6th Hometown player to their lineup
The Montreal Canadiens are in trouble at center and in the attack in general. There are too many defensemen and goalies, but on the offensive side, there are many injuries, and of course, Sean Monahan has left.
Similar to last year, the lack of forwards opens up opportunities for other players who can seize their chance. Alex Belzile and especially Rafaël Harvey-Pinard finished the season in Montreal.
We know the rest of the story for RHP, as he signed a two-year contract and is part of the lineup. This year, the fortunate one getting his opportunity is Brandon Gignac.
The center is averaging nearly a point per game in the AHL, which is simply remarkable. He joins the Canadiens as reinforcements after signing a well-deserved two-way contract.
He becomes the 6th Hometown player used by the Habs this season out of 46 in total in the NHL. That's 13% for just one team.
"Brandon Gignac will play his first game with the Habs tonight. He will be the 6th Hometown player to wear the Canadiens' uniform this season (with Matheson, Savard, Montembeault, RHP, and Roy) out of a total of 46 Hometown players in the entire NHL.
So, 13% with the Canadiens. Not bad!"
If there were only 10 teams in the NHL, the Canadiens would still have more Hometown players than other teams. For those who say the organization doesn't make efforts in this regard, this text is for you.
