The reasons for Cole Caufield's success have just been revealed, and it's extraordinary what Martin St-Louis is accomplishing with him
Cole Caufield is having an excellent start to the season, with nine points in eight games, including two game-winning goals in overtime. What's remarkable about these statistics is that it's not particularly surprising given his talent.
However, what's more surprising, especially given his small stature, is how good he is at retrieving pucks along the boards. He plays a strong physical game and doesn't back down from anyone.
The secret to his success has been revealed by Anthony Martineau, as it's clear that the coach spent a significant amount of time working one-on-one with Cole to practice and provide advice on this aspect of his game.
"Martin St-Louis and Cole Caufield spent a long time this morning working on effective ways to retrieve loose pucks along the boards."
- Anthony Martineau
Even though he's already enjoying success and has greatly improved this aspect of his game, Caufield isn't satisfied. He's always hungry and wants to get even better. Who better to teach him what to do than a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame who is also of small stature!
With this new skill in his arsenal and a goal every two games pace, Caufield could become the most productive player for the Canadiens since Alex Kovalev in the 2007-08 season, provided he stays healthy.
