This signing has raised some questions about the future of Christian Dvorak in Montreal, as noted by Marco D'Amico from Montreal Hockey Now. He currently has two years left on his contract and will be making a salary of 4.45 million dollars for both years. Furthermore, starting July 1st, a no-movement clause will be included in his contract, allowing Dvorak to only be traded to eight teams of his choice.
With Sean Monahan and Kirby Dach primarily playing on the wing this season, both players are established centermen in their careers. Knowing that the Canadiens already have three top-tier centers already on their roster, GM Kent Hughes may be tempted to trade away the former Coyote before his no-movement clause comes into effect.
Since his arrival in Montreal, Dvorak has shown some good defensive qualities, but his offensive production has been somewhat disappointing. In 64 games last season, the native of Palos Heights only scored 10 goals and 18 assists (28 points), calling into question his contribution to the Montreal lineup.
With the exception of Ryan O'Reilly and Jonathan Toews, there will be very few options for teams who wish to add a center during the opening of the free agent market. Could Kent Hughes take advantage of this situation and trade Christian Dvorak? If the Canadiens are able to acquire a young prospect or even draft picks while saving nearly 9 million dollars over the next two years, such a trade could become highly attractive for the organization.
