Huge slap in the face for the Montreal Canadiens and Jake Allen

On March 8th, just before the NHL trade deadline, Jake Allen was traded from the Canadiens to the Devils for a conditional 3rd-round pick.

This pick will turn into a 2nd-rounder if Allen plays more than 40 games next year, which seems very realistic given that he started 13 of the 19 games he played in New Jersey after the trade.

The problem is that Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald is currently working hard to bring an elite goaltender to his team.

Notably, Jacob Markstrom and Linus Ullmark are both available.

"The GM, Tom Fitzgerald, added to this on Monday when he revealed to NHL.com that he was willing to part with his first-round pick.

'If we feel it can help us now and in the short-term future, then yes, I'm listening. I haven't received an offer yet, but the more I talk to teams, the more I tell them: "Look, I can part with the 10th pick, but I need something [significant]."' - Tom Fitzgerald, via TVA Sports

He is indeed targeting a goaltender and is willing to sacrifice future assets, including the 10th overall pick in the upcoming draft.

"Now the general manager is getting involved: the New Jersey Devils want to acquire a goaltender, even if it means trading their 10th overall pick in the next draft." - Via TVA Sports

This is truly a slap in the face for Jake Allen, who was perceived, until proven otherwise, as the number one goaltender for the upcoming season.

It would also be a disappointment for the Canadiens, who would miss out on a 2nd-round pick and have to settle for a selection about thirty spots later.
