Is it over for Michael Pezzetta with the Canadiens? Eric Engels provides important information
Michael Pezzetta is far from being a superstar in the NHL, but he knows how to stand out and is able to play his role well.
We agree that he will never be a top-6 player, but as an energy forward, he knows exactly what to do. It's been his bread and butter for years.
He is still useful to an NHL team, without a doubt, but is he still with the Canadiens by default? Could he be traded? According to Eric Engels, it's very possible if Florian Xhekaj or Luke Tuch manage to steal his spot.
"Michael Pezzetta has value for the Canadiens right now, but that value could slightly decrease if either Florian Xhekaj or Luke Tuch, or both, prove they are ready for the NHL.
I don't know if they will immediately show this in training camp, but I don't think it's far-fetched that one or both could make Pezzetta more expendable in the near future."
- Eric Engels
From what we've seen at the Canadiens' rookie camp, both Florian Xhekaj and Luke Tuch played on a line with Tyler Thorpe and brought a lot of energy.
However, it's only rookie camp. It's during training camp, against more experienced players, that we'll see what they're really capable of.
In my opinion, Florian Xhekaj and Luke Tuch will spend a year in Laval, especially since Pezzetta (#55) has one year left on his contract. Kent Hughes may try to trade him at the deadline, but I don't think the two young players will steal his spot at the start of the season.
