Is Kent Hughes about to imitate Daniel Brière with Ivan Demidov?
The least we can say is that the Flyers hit the jackpot by selecting Matvei Michkov at 7th overall, as he will arrive in the NHL two years earlier than expected.
It's incredible when you think about it. Many analysts believed he was the second-best prospect behind Connor Bedard, but red flags scared off several teams, including the Canadiens.
Daniel Brière was ultimately able to buy out Michkov's contract in the KHL, and the young forward is coming to Philadelphia this year.
Is Kent Hughes about to imitate Daniel Brière?
According to Stu Cowan, Hughes may use the same strategy and buy out Demidov's contract in the KHL so he can arrive this season.
We know that SKA has many forwards under contract, and rather than losing Ivan at the end of the season for nothing, they might as well get some money.
"Kent Hughes said after the draft that it would be good for his development to play a season in the KHL before coming to Montreal. However, Kent Hughes clarified that it would not be desirable for Demidov to be sent to juniors for another year and if so, the team would explore its options.
One of those options is negotiating a contract buyout to bring him here sooner, as the Flyers did with Michkov.
From St. Petersburg's perspective, they will lose him for nothing next year, so is it more beneficial for them to have him play a season or negotiate a contract buyout and receive some money?"
It's a statement that makes a lot of sense, but we won't have a resolution until the end of August.
KHL teams will then have an idea of their starting lineup, and if Demidov isn't in their plans, expect him to arrive much earlier in Montreal.
