Indeed, more than 10 defensemen could realistically hope to play in the NHL next year, including Lane Hutson, Logan Mailloux, and David Reinbacher.
While the future looks bright for these players in Montreal, that's not the case for everyone. According to David Pagnotta, Justin Barron, Jayden Struble, and Jordan Harris could be traded to acquire a top-6 forward.
Trading one is crucial, and multiple trades could be a viable option. The Canadiens have too many defensemen, which is causing a problem.
Both Justin Barron and Jordan Harris need to clear waivers before being sent down to the AHL this season, and they would undoubtedly be claimed immediately.
To avoid losing them for nothing, Kent Hughes will need to keep them in Montreal, potentially leaving other more talented or deserving defensemen in Laval.
You can see where this is going. Imagine if Kent Hughes can't trade one or more defensemen and is forced to leave Lane Hutson, Logan Mailloux, and others in Laval, which isn't ideal for their development.
This could cause internal frustration and upset fans, hindering the development of high-level prospects or leading to the loss of young defensemen for nothing.
Additionally, Johnathan Kovacevic should also be considered for departure, in my humble opinion.
