Fortunately, his errors haven't harmed the Canadiens, as his trades and signings are usually quite solid. The problem is that he has received warnings from the NHL for trying to provide too many details.
While rumors about his interest in goaltender Yaroslav Askarov are numerous, Kent Hughes was asked to comment by Tony Marinaro but chose to remain silent.
It's unfortunate, but essentially, by trying to be as transparent as possible, Kent Hughes was doing himself a disservice. He revealed information that shouldn't have been disclosed.
We remember in 2022, when he was attempting to trade Ben Chiarot, he mentioned:
Since Yaroslav Askarov ultimately never came through Montreal and is now with San Jose, Kent Hughes preferred not to disclose any details about his discussions and the rumors.
However, his silence speaks volumes. If the interest had been nonexistent and he had never tried to acquire Askarov, he could have probably said so without consequences, in my opinion.
The fact that he dares not speak confirms that the goaltender was indeed on his radar. Nonetheless, we now understand why Kent Hughes is more cautious with his remarks and doesn't provide as many details as we might hope.
