Indeed, the assistant to captain Nick Suzuki is highly appreciated both for his on-ice involvement and off-ice contributions.
He finished 9th among defensemen in scoring last year, with a solid 62 points. This is excellent, especially during a rebuild.
However, logic dictates that he might be on the trading block. The young players are pushing hard under the veterans, especially among left-handed defensemen.
Moreover, Matheson's value is at its peak right now. Kent Hughes could capitalize on this, and according to Marc-Olivier Beaudoin, he should do it.
Beaudoin suggests trading Matheson and the Jets' first-round pick to the Hurricanes for Martin Necas.
He proposed this in response to Alain Crête's comment, stating that it will take more than Matheson to bring Necas to Montreal.
The Hurricanes will lose one or more defensemen to free agency on July 1st, and adding Matheson, who costs only $4.875 million for another two years, would be significant for them.
The Canadiens would probably suffer from Mike's departure, but the young Lane Hutson, Kaiden Guhle, Arber Xhekaj, and Adam Engstrom, not to mention Jayden Struble and others, are pushing behind.
Personally, if the Hurricanes agree, given the Canadiens' depth at this position, I would also accept the trade.
