Kent Hughes needs to improve his attack, and he was still awaiting some excellent news by the start of training camp.

Indeed, the young prodigy Ivan Demidov has signed a one-season contract with SKA in the KHL, and Hughes does not have permission to negotiate with the team to bring him to Montreal.

However, if SKA decides not to play Demidov in the KHL and instead assigns him to the VHL or MHL, the young player can express his desire for an agreement to bring him to Montreal earlier, and then Kent Hughes could negotiate.

In summary, it must come from the player and the Canadiens. One might believe that Kent Hughes hoped that SKA would not want Demidov, but this is not the case. Demidov will play in the KHL and will have an important role.

"It seems very likely that the plan is for Ivan Demidov to play in the KHL next season and have an important role, as mentioned by the head coach of SKA Saint Petersburg in an interview with the Russian media, Match TV."

So it's confirmed for Kent Hughes, and he won't have immediate help from his most recent 5th overall pick.

The good news is that the Canadiens and SKA are working together for the development of Demidov. There is openness to cooperation, which is really positive.

We know it wasn't easy for Daniel Brière in the Matvei Michkov case, so learning that things are going well with Kent Hughes is encouraging.

For the sake of his development, it's excellent news that Demidov will play significant minutes in the KHL. This means he could come to North America with experience against men in the second-best league in the world.
